What Is Your Current obsession?
- EDITION #4 -
I don’t know about you, but with more time on my hands at home, I have caught myself endlessly scrolling through Pinterest. I’m constantly finding new design trends and pinning ideas for my future home. While doing this, one thing I have noticed is that there are a few general themes throughout my client projects and my own collection of Pinterest boards.
Although I have many obsessions right now, ranging from Mango Habanero hot wings to tapered fit trousers - in terms of design I would say I have my top three obsessions nailed down. To see what those are and my favorite ways to implement them into your space, keep reading!
#1: THE COLOR GREEN
Yes, the color green. For the most part this color is something many avoid in their design palettes, however, lately I’ve been loving to accentuate it. I’m not saying make the color of your carpet green (it’s 2020 c’mon!), but rather include it by having fresh plants like eucalyptus in a vase or a large olive tree in the corner of your room.
Green is known to provide calm and restful stimuli to your body, as well as, create an environment of productivity. I know for a fact that in my next home, I will be painting my office/den a deep forest or olive green for that exact reason!

#2: OVERSIZED ARTWORK
If you ask me, gallery walls were so 2019. Since the start of this year I have realized that I am more of a minimalist and would much rather have one large canvas or print than have multiple smaller pieces. This will not only make a statement in your space, but also keep it clean without any distractions.
When picking a piece of art for my projects, I am a big fan of abstract because it evokes different emotions from different individuals. Abstract canvases also bring in texture and vibrant or subdued colors to match any color palette. My favorite way of throwing it in my design is simply leaning it against the wall rather than hanging it up.
Tip: Go for a piece that is at least 6 FT tall if putting it behind a sofa, at least 4 FT wide if hanging on the wall… and remember always get your canvas or print framed!
#3: VINTAGE FINDS
This is my favorite part! I think no matter what kind of design style you have, vintage finds can make or break your space! Don’t fall prey to the common misconception that modern homes cannot include some great finds from your travels or vintage decor scattered throughout.
I love layering faded vintage rugs in a Mid-Century home design or placing a Parisian floor mirror in a client’s Contemporary bedroom. Personally, I believe that incorporating vintage finds with your everyday decor gives your home a stylish, lived-in look.
Although I make it sound easy, you want to make sure you do not overdo it or mix in items that seem out-of-place. My best advice is to go with what feels natural. Don’t force it but don’t be afraid to get creative! Old grain sacks and tea towels make perfect pillowcases, and old quilts can be beautiful wall hangings in an otherwise modern space. Frame vintage scarves for instant artwork, or use vintage curtains and blankets in the place of modern fabric for a covered headboard with a vintage vibe.
My current design obsessions may be different than yours, but let’s make it a mission to implement them in our everyday lifestyle. And hey, maybe we can’t be caught scavenging around thrift stores or design boutiques right now, but there’s always online shopping!
